By Janice Elizabeth Small The best things in life are free and that is truly the case when it comes to planning your weight loss program. Whatever you do, don't waste your money on diet patches, pills and potions - they may harm you and they will certainly harm your wallet. Stand well clear of anything which is supposed to help you lose weight that hasn't been prescribed by your doctor. After all you already own everything you need to lose weight. You don't need the latest diet program. You don't need more fitness equipment gathering dust in a corner. You don't need a gym membership. You don't need diet foods. How much have you paid in the past for all the diet books and paraphernalia that were meant to help you but had no lasting effect on your weight? To start a successful natural weight loss program you just need the following basic plan:- 1. Eat good healthy home cooked food Healthy in this case means low in fat, sugar and salt and with plenty of fruit and vegetables, natural whole grains and lean proteins. There are a ton of fantastic healthy and delicious recipes out there that you can use. You'll find them on the internet, in your own cookbooks or you can borrow recipe books from the library. Select the best meals you can and create a weekly meal plan. Enjoy your food more on your weight loss program than ever before! Plan your meals on a weekly basis and keep to it. Your shopping list becomes your best ally in your weight loss plan. Eating out is often the downfall in any weight loss program. If you can't avoid it, and especially if you eat out a lot, choose your restaurants with care and select the healthiest dishes from the menu. You could also ask them to prepare something healthy - most good restaurants would be able to provide plain fish or chicken for you with a salad (dressing on the side!) 2. Don't eat unless you are physically hungry and stop eating as soon as you are satisfied. If you are overweight, you can be sure that you have eaten more food than your body needs in terms of calories. Chances are you've done that both through your choices of food - high in fat and sugar - which bulks up your body without filling you up and also through eating larger portion sizes than you really need of everything. If you've forgotten what a normal portion is, it's best to think of a meal as being about the size of your two clenched fists. Put that much on your plate to start with and see how it feels to eat that much. About right? Stop there. Too little? Have a spoonful more or fill up on salad or vegetables - you can't do much harm with them! 3. Add as much movement into your day as you can. Most weight loss programs have an exercise element. Great though this is in theory, it's where many people give up. It's just too demoralizing when you go red in the face, sweating and heart pounding after a couple of minutes when you're supposed to do twenty! Twenty minutes! You're lucky if you can do five. Why put yourself through this when you're clearly not ready? The best way to add more movement into your day is by walking. Walk everywhere! It's free! If you can afford it, get a pedometer and measure how much you're doing each day. Aim for 10,000 steps every day when you're trying to lose weight - it's also great to stay at that level once you reach your target - it will help you stay slim. If you're not fit, check with your doctor and start with a few hundred steps, adding to your total every day. If you don't have a pedometer, keep a note of your progress by counting the number of minutes you walk and get a rough idea of the distance you've covered (for example, one block and two lamp-posts), gradually increasing both as you get fitter. You can walk whatever the weather if you have the right clothes and footwear or you can just walk around your home or the shops - it really doesn't matter as long as you move! Of course there are more things you can do to lose weight, but these three offer the best start to any weight loss plan. There would be far fewer overweight people in the world if everyone followed these simple and natural steps. Weight loss programs make things complicated because they need to differentiate themselves from each other. They are not just going to tell you the obvious - they have to wrap it up in ratios and percentages, points and calories, rules and regulations until you can't live a normal life and follow them. Free yourself from the latest diet fad and just start by following these steps. Weight loss, though still not as easy as falling off the proverbial log - we know that is just a fantasy - will happen more easily than ever before and in a completely natural way which gives lasting results. Is Your Mobile Phone Worth Unlocking? 3 Questions to Ask Yourself
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Samantha_Hasson]Samantha Hasson Are you one of the millions of folks across the country that has gotten incredibly attached to their cell phone? The phone is comfortable both in your hand and on your ear; youve gotten accustomed to all of the functions; even if blindfolded, you could still dial anyone you ever needed to. Plus, youve spent a small fortune on faceplates and other accessories and doodads, all for this one phone. Everything would be great except for the fact that you have less than favorable views regarding your wireless service provider. In order to switch cell phone service, youll need to get a new phone. Gone are the days when youd have to put up with inadequate service just to keep your phone. Mobile phone unlocking is the latest craze sweeping the nation, enabling you to keep your phone and hook it up to any service youd like. This service simply unlocks your current services hold on your phone. It works like this: Every mobile phone has a serial number to identify it, known as the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) by the cell phone industry. This number connects a mobile phone to a server, as well a phone to a subscriber- so its connecting you, the subscriber to a phone and service at the same time. Many mobile phones have a removable card called a SIM (Subscriber Information Module) that connects the phone to owner, too. When you buy a cell phone and sign the contract, the server puts a lock on the SIM so the phone will only work with them and no other service. All that, and you paid for the phone. Of course, there is a fee for unlocking your phone, so its important that you figure out if its worth it to get our mobile phone unlocked, or if you should just buy a new phone. To help you with your quest, here are 3 questions to ask yourself: 1. How much did you pay for your phone and how much is your mobile phone worth?
If you paid a lot for your mobile phone, you might not be ready to give it up just yet. If your phone was one of the free, bottom of the barrel models and you dont care for it, a new phone purchase might just be in your future. 2. Have you had any problems with your mobile phone? Maybe youve had battery issues ever since the phone trial period ended. Maybe you dont like your current phone, but the fit within the nightstand drawer is your all-time favorite. If you like your phone, mobile phone unlocking is the only way to keep and reuse it. 3. What are your future plans for your phone after your contract expires, if any? Remember, having your mobile phone unlocked does not get you out of any contract between you and a cell service. See your signed contract for details. Beating The Scale
By Amaury Hernandez Having been on a diet or two myself over the years, I know how aggravating the morning ritual of stepping on an uncooperative scale can be. Though there is no escape from the need to reduce calories and increase activity to lose those extra pounds, the choice of the foods included in the diet play an important role because of the different manner in which our bodies handle fats and carbohydrates. The statement by many people that the food goes directly from the mouth to the hips is not entirely wrong. The body coverts the fat in food into body fat with great ease, particularly when the meal also includes carbohydrates or sugars that provide the energy. When sugar enters the bloodstream it stimulates the release of insulin, which then activates the enzymes which help the passage of fat from the bloodstream into the fat cells. Even calorie-burning exercise can't prevent the fat from being stored in this way, and once it is in the cells it is very difficult to shed. But carbohydrates are stored first as glycogen, much of it in the liver. Although the capacity for glycogen storage is limited, the body can expand its capacity in individuals who exercise. When the maximum is reached, then the body may increase your metabolic rate and burn off additional carbohydrates. It is only when these two mechanisms are overburdened by the quantities of carbohydrates coming into the system, that conversion to fat takes place. So the answer may be to reduce your fat intake to the minimum, and utilize carbohydrates to provide the calories you need for energy and work. In practical terms, you may eat the potato without the butter, and the pasta without the Alfredo! Add a modest portion of protein, maintain a comfortable exercise program, stir in a bit more patience, and you have the formula for beating the battle of the scale. For more information, I recommend you to visit http://www.healthelper.com/, I've learned a lot in there. You Can Grow Your Own Herb Garden - Part 5
By Melinda Robinson Care and Feeding of Your Herb Garden Most herbs are fairly easy to maintain. They don't need water every day and don't really need fertilizer. The biggest concern you'll have is weeding. To find out if your garden needs water, take a finger and push it into the soil. If it is damp or wet under the surface, you don't need to water it. If it stays dry all the way to your first knuckle, water it. Should your plants start drooping, water right away. This is more liable to happen in warmer climes and sometimes can be attributed to very hot temperatures, but is more likely to signify a desperate need for water. The best way to water your herb garden is a technique called deep watering. This involves watering the garden for an extended period of time, until small puddles begin forming. This method is called deep watering because youre ensuring that the water goes deep into the soil, down to the roots of your plants. If you deep water, you can leave your garden for a few days or more (depending on your climate and recent weather) without additional watering. As I've said previously, herbs don't really need any kind of fertilizer, but if you feel better doing so, they might like some compost. I once tried Miracle-Gro on my plants, but wasn't comfortable with the idea of placing chemicals into the herbs and besides, it didn't do a lick of good. Sometimes you'll have problems with pests. The very best way to combat them is to use an organic solution since youll be treating plants intended for human consumption. Try the following recipe from Canning Perennials, a nursery in Ontario, Canada. Basic Soap Spray
You'll need a 1-quart hand sprayer filled with warm water. Add a squirt of non-detergent soap such as Ivory or baby shampoo. Do not use detergent as this could harm your plants. Additions to the Basic Soap Spray
When using additives, just add a teaspoon to your quart container of basic soap spray. It is best to test the mixture on one or two leaves before spraying the entire plant, to ensure that no leaf damage will result. 1. Oil - Add a teaspoon of vegetable oil to the basic soap spray to improve adherence.
2. Garlic - Combine about 1/2 cup of mineral oil with a dozen or so crushed cloves of garlic. Allow to stand for 48 hours. Strain. Start by using roughly 1 tsp in your quart sprayer.
3. Hot Spray - In a food processor, liquify a small onion and an entire bulb of garlic. Seep this mixture in a cup of olive oil. After 48 hours, strain the olive oil and discard the pulp. Add a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Store in a glass jar. To use, add a teaspoon to basic soap spray. You can also use diatomaceous earth, a non-toxic powder made from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. It is deadly to any insect and completely harmless to all other living creatures. For severe problems, you might want to introduce some ladybugs or praying mantises to the garden. These predators will get rid of the "bad" bugs and leave your plants alone. Spiders are also good to have in your garden for the same reason, and you will often find that they have taken up residence there of their own accord. Another solution to pests is called companion gardening. This entails planting herbs that repel bugs near plants that attract them. For example, one plant might have a tendency to get aphids, but another plant nearby repels them so that you don't have to worry about the bugs. There are too many tips and tricks to companion gardening to go into here, so you may want to look for a book on this if you are interested. A very common problem many herb gardeners encounter is called "damping off." This happens when a fungus attacks the seedling, weakens the stem, and eventually kills it. When your seedlings have flopped over and appear to have given way at the point of emergence from the soil, they have damped off, and there's nothing to be done except plant a whole new crop. One year this fungus attacked every seedling I had. It started with the basil, which is most susceptible to damping off, and spread to everything else. It is impossible to cure but is easily prevented. The fungus thrives in damp conditions; restricted airflow is a big contributor to damping off. Crowded growing conditions are another factor of damping off. Sow your herb seeds thinly, or, if planting seedlings, make sure they have plenty of room between them. To stave off the dampness which encourages the fungus, try a light covering of Perlite(TM) or clean sand sprinkled over the soil where the seeds are sown. This will absorb excess moisture. Well-cared for herb gardens rarely have problems with fungi, but it does happen. To combat fungus on your plants, here are a couple of organic recipes, easily made in your kitchen, from Canning Perennials: Baking Soda Spray
1 quart of water
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 squirt of liquid, non-detergent soap Spray infected leaves thoroughly, including undersides and stems. In damp weather repeat regularly. This is an effective mixture to help prevent botrytis, black spot, rust, and powdery mildew. Potato Starch Spray
1 quart of water
2 to 4 tablespoons of potato flour
1 squirt of liquid, non-detergent soap In addition to fungal diseases, this blend is also an effective insect spray. Helpful Tips to Lose Weight
By Paul Cris Many people are really exasperated with the same old tips for weight loss. Therefore we have added a few different tips to lose weight below: Always find a chance to move around. Do not use a vehicle if you are able to walk. Preferably run around if you have the time. Almost 70% of your calories are burned in this process.
Instead of depending on magical ways to lose weight, apply your own efforts by eating less and moving more. Reduce your junk food intake and stick to wholesome foods such as fruits and vegetables. Imagine your body as the machine to burn your weight and actually perform the workouts. Do not plan dieting because it is not a solution for a longer duration. You can easily feel tired by following a particular diet pattern for a shorter duration. It reduces your rate of metabolism by draining away the water content and retaining the fat content. Schedule an exercise program almost daily and gradually increase your workout. Reduce one spicy meal in a week and work towards healthy meal consumption. Think in realistic terms and decide to lose about one to two pounds per week. Even if you lose weight rapidly you will revert back to the original weight soon. Contact people who have successfully lost weight and follow the same procedures they have tried out. So if you follow these tips you are sure to achieve your targeted goal and lose weight consistently. Paul has been providing answers to lots of queries through his website on a wide variety of subjects ranging from satellite phones to acne. TV's Effects On Your Family - Lessons From The Easter Egg Hunt
By Katherine Westphal It was the big Easter Egg Hunt. My friend Christy and I lined up with the other kids. We all gazed greedily at the field of goodies before us. "GO!" yelled the announcer. En masse, we rushed forwards. For some reason, everyone veered to the left. I stopped. I glanced at the untouched feast to my right. I ran right, gleefully scooping the candy before the rest caught on. At the end, I had a bagful of candy. Christy, who had followed the herd, had one piece. I was eight at the time, but I never forgot that day or its lessons. What did I do differently from the other kids that day? I simply stopped. I stopped, looked around, and analyzed the situation. And I left the herd. I saw quickly that it was to my advantage NOT to follow the herd that day. Leaving the TV herd In 2003 I left the herd again in a much bigger way. I got rid of my TV. I am one of those rare few that do not have a TV, by choice. And I am reaping the benefits of being TV-free. The reason? In 2001, the kids and I were without TV for several months. Like I did when I was little, I stopped. This time I took notice of the changes in my children and myself during the time we did not have a TV. Then when we got it back, I took notice of the changes again. Based on my observations, I decided we were better off without a TV. Stop and observe YOUR family But it does not matter what TV does to me or my kids. It does not matter that numerous studies show TV's links to obesity, illiteracy, consumerism, etc. The real question is: How does TV affect you and your family? Find out by stopping and observing. Zombie kids Stop and observe how your body and mind react to TV. Look deeply into your kids zombie-like eyes as they watch TV. Compare that to the look in their eyes as they play outdoors. How do you and your spouse look when watching TV? Take pictures if necessary. Take note of how your children behave after they have spent the afternoon in front of the TV set. How do they behave after playing with their friends? How well do you behave after watching several hours of TV? Your spouse? You may need to get an outside opinion for accuracy. Consumers 'R Us How do your children behave at the store when confronted with the cool blue gizmo that has been advertised for months on TV commercials? Are they whining and begging and nagging incessantly for that gizmo? How much extra money do you spend chasing the latest fads and fashions, as shown on TV? Feelin' Groovy Observe how much you really remember of that educational program you just saw. How well do you remember the last book you read in comparison? Test yourself. Stop and consider how you feel after watching several hours of television. Do you feel alert, happy, and energetic? Or do you feel lethargic and depressed and ready to turn the TV back on? Keep a diary to get an accurate assessment. Family Time? Most importantly, monitor the number of hours you and your family spend in front of the TV per week. Is it 20?...30?...40? The average American spends 28 hours per week in front of a TV set. How much do you watch? Now ask yourself: Is this how you really want to spend your time? Is this how you want your kids to spend their time? By age eighteen the average American will have spent three full years in front of the TV? By age seventy the total is 11.67 years. Stop and think if this is what you really want out of life. I did, and I got rid of my TV. Katherine Westphal is the founder of a daring new website, http://TrashYourTV.com, that makes it fun and easy for people to get control of their TV set. Are you addicted to TV? Beating Stress, Anxiety and Depression
By Chris Green Why are these illnesses on the rise? And why do some people become so ill through these illnesses, they can find it hard to function? Well they sure dont happen overnight! You dont suddenly wake up one morning and feel stressed or depressed. Its not like flicking on a light switch! And by the same rule, if youre suffering, you cant just wake up one morning, flick off the switch and say Great, Im better now. Many people who dont suffer from these illnesses often say to sufferers: Come on, snap out of it. If only it was so easy! Should anyone say this to you, please forgive them as its just a lack of understanding. Its very hard for people to understand how youre feeling if they havent been there. The fact that these illnesses dont suddenly happen means we can draw some parallels with illnesses such as heart diseases, some cancers and strokes. Because these illnesses dont just suddenly happen either. If we look at heart disease, its often the result of damaging behaviors practised over many years. Behaviors such as smoking, lack of exercise and a diet high in saturated fat. Strokes are a result of similar behaviors and cancers too, particularly heavy smoking and drinking as you know. So how do stressful illnesses such as stress, depression and anxiety compare? Stress is also the product of harmful mental habits and behaviors. These habits and behaviors are developed and practised over years since childhood in most cases. These are the mental processes that enable us to make sense of our lives and the circumstances were faced with. When we reach adulthood, we perform them automatically because weve learned these behaviors by repetition. Think of it like learning to drive a car. Initially, the skills required to control the vehicle needed conscious thought. It seemed really difficult didnt it? But once weve performed them for sufficient periods, we drive on auto-pilot. Weve mastered the required skills by repetition. Heres the key: if we eat healthy food, take regular exercise, cut out harmful behaviors such as smoking and drinking, we improve our health and drastically reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and strokes. We are repeating good habits, habits that will give our physical well being a huge boost. Its exactly the same for stress. Whats important to understand is that not everyone becomes stressed or depressed even when tragic and traumatic circumstances happen to them. Just like people who lead a healthy lifestyle and avoid harmful habits and behaviors, people dont become stressed or depressed because they have learned effective habits and behaviors that prevent stress from arising. This is very good news if you suffer from these illnesses. Because just as we can learn habits and behaviors which cause us to become highly-stressed, depressed or anxious, we can learn the habits and behaviors which stop these terrible illnesses in their tracks. And the more often we make use of them, well soon begin to perform them automatically and our mental health will benefit enormously. No more feeling stressed out. No more feeling unable to cope. No more anxiety and no more depression. EVER. Im living proof of this. For 5 years, a series of traumatic events sent me spiralling into an anxiety-induced depression nightmare. I came out of it by learning the natural skills that starve these illnesses. The more I used them, the less anxious I became. Theyre now as natural to me as driving a car, and Ive completely eradicated anxiety and depression from my life. You can do it too. Chris Green is the author of the new book Conquering Stress, a special program which will show you how to conquer stressful illnesses such as depression, anxiety, panic and worry permanently and without taking powerful drugs. Small Business Grants And Loans To Start Your Dream Business
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ian_Henman]Ian Henman To many individuals don't follow the path they really want to in life. Almost everyone one of those people who wish they had done something different with their career have something to shoot off about. Things like well it probably never would have worked out, or I just couldn't afford to go to college are just a few of the excuses that these people come up with. The reality is if you really wanted to make something happen, then you would make it happen. If you want something bad enough we can almost always find a way to make it happen, of course there might be some physical restrictions, such as if you wanted to play in the NBA but your only 5'1 tall. How ever I am here to say that there is nothing more satisfying then becoming successful at something you love. You need to give it your best shot, it's that cut and dry. Even if starting your own business is that thing you have always wanted to do, but you don't have the required funds to make it a reality, you can always find small business grants and loans. You just need to do your research first. You're not along if you need small business grants and loans to get your business started. The thing that a lot of would be small business owners never do is seek out the money they need. Think about it college students do it all the time. When I was attending university I searched for weeks for student aid, scholarships, and grants. There was just no way I was going to be able to afford the big bill I had coming in the fall on my part time wages from pumping gas. Now if you're not familiar grants are money that doesn't need to be repaid, while a loan of course does need to be repaid. The key is that if your researching loans consider the lowest interest rates you can find. So you need to use this same mentality when your researching small business grants and loans. Search for grants, and loans, of course free money is better then money you need to repay, but if you do need to get a loan ensure you're getting the best interest rate you can find. Taking the Plunge Meeting Your Online Match (Part 1)
By Croydon J Hounslow So you made a success of it, you found a match online and now youre meeting up? Congratulations! The hardest part of the journey is over and now the fun begins. But remember that first impressions do count and if youre not careful, you could still mess things up at this stage. With this in mind, here are my top tips for your first face-to-face: Firstly, make sure you choose the right venue; this may seem obvious but the choice of location can really make or break a date. Ideally you should choose somewhere thats public, with people around but where you can still hold a conversation. Meeting at your house or your dates house is a definite no-no, this not only sends the wrong signals for a first date, but could potentially be unsafe however well you think you know someone online, they could still turn out to be a real world psychopath. Even worse, they could be really boring and fail to take the hint when its time to leave! Cinemas are often regarded as good venues for dates, but think about it youre stuck for up to three hours with your date in a place where you cant talk or even look at each other properly; is that really the best environment to make an impression? Likewise the main dancefloor at Ministry of Sound is not ideal for an involved conversation. Of course, this is not a definitive rule, you might have got chatting in the first place through a shared love of films or dance music, but for the majority of meetings a small intimate caf or quiet pub provides the perfect environment for a little light conversation, some flirting and plenty of eye contact for that all important personal connection that is the key to a successful date. Time of day can be an important factor for a meeting as well. Think about what kind of date you want to have. What do you know about your match already? Is he or she an all-night party animal or an afternoon tea on the lawn type? Studies show that our intentions in online dating are perceived differently depending on the time of day we choose to interact, and this also applies to real world dating. If youre serious about looking for a long term partner and you think this match could possibly be the one, you should consider meeting earlier in the afternoon or evening. This gives the impression that you are a more sober and dependable character, and that your intentions are honest. If youre more into playing the field, or are aiming for a more casual and fun relationship then meeting up later in the evening should be fine. Of course the time of day and venue have to also work together; cafs, art galleries, perhaps a visit to the aquarium are all classic afternoon or early evening activities, leaving time for you to continue to a bar or restaurant later if things are going particularly well. Late night dates are better suited to more upbeat or raucous activities such as gigs, ten-pin bowling or maybe a spot of salsa dancing. Once again, there is no definitive formula that will help you to choose the perfect setting for your date, think about what you know about the person youre meeting up with, what the two of you have in common and try to choose a date scenario that reflects this. Above have fun, relax and be safe! Choosing A Wedding Dress
By Eric Hartwell If youre like most girls, chances are, youve fantasized more about your wedding dress than youve fantasized about your groom. Yes, the wedding dress is the highlight of every little girls wedding dreams. Some want to look like princesses with beautiful, frilly gowns and a sparkling tiara on their hair. Some want to look like fairies, fantasizing about a wreath of sweet smelling flowers in lieu of the diamond tiara. Some want to look as elegant as queens. Whatever your fantasy may be, one things for sure you want your wedding dress to be just perfect. The Stuff Little Girls Dreams are Made Of Who can blame you? After all, its your day. Its the day when everybodys supposed to be looking at you, when youre the star of the show, when youre more beautiful than every other girl in the world, when your husband-to-be takes one look at you walking down that aisle and falls head over heels in love all over again. Sure, youre sharing the day with your groom. But he only has to wear a tuxedo, same as every other groom out there. Chances are, his clothes and the best mans clothes arent much different. But you, you have to outshine everyone the bridesmaids, the maid of honor, the guests, everyone. Besides, when you were dreaming about your wedding dress, he was dreaming about space aliens and rocket ships so the wedding gown probably means a lot more to you. Your wedding dress really has to be perfect. What does the perfect wedding dress look like, though? Should you choose a white gown like most brides? Or should you be unique and choose a shocking orange gown? Should you go for the princess look, the classical look, the elegant look, or the fairy look? Should you wear a tiara, a diadem, a wedding veil, or should you just place some flowers in your hair? The choice is wide and varied and it pays to spend some time on thinking about what will be a costly and important investment. Alaskan Wild Salmon
By Della Franklin For years health experts have been promoting the benefits of eating fish. The oils in fish have been known to help fight cancer, and other dangerous diseases. The omega 3’s that fish contain can also help the body stay healthy. Fish also provides valuable sources of vitamins, and minerals that are rarely found in meat, and vegetables. Salmon is one of the healthiest fishes to eat, and coincidently one of the most popular fishes consumed by the public today. Wild salmon is known to be much better for your body then farm raised salmon. Wild salmon can be found in a number of places, but the most robust wild salmon come from Alaska. Think about it, if it’s good enough for the bears, shouldn’t it be good enough for you? Wild Alaskan salmon can be used for many dishes, in a number of cuts, and filets. The most popular salmon dishes are paired with lemon, capers, and broccoli. Grilled salmon on a bed of fresh romaine lettuce is a great dish that many people enjoy often. There are salmon based pastas that people call their favorite dishes of all time. And of course there is the smoked salmon, which is the perfect addition to a cracker and some sharp cheddar cheese. Baby salmon, otherwise known as lox, is a popular dish for breakfast lovers. The lox and cream cheese bagel is one of the most popular breakfast delights at many a New York deli. The baby salmon often comes from Alaska or Canada. No matter how you enjoy your salmon dishes, it’s important that you do enjoy salmon. The exotic fish flavor of this pink centered masterpiece is a delight for all that give it a try. If you feel in doubt about the great benefits of salmon, and the robust taste, just look at a picture of the wild bears eating it, they seem to enjoy the taste. Bible Study - The Gospel According to Mark - An Introduction
By Clyde Annach Since the beginning of the Gospel tradition Mark has been viewed as an inferior, abridged version of the book of Matthew. Augustine's statement that "Mark imitated Matthew like a lackey and is regarded as his abbrevitor was the prevailing line of thinking until about the first half of the nineteenth century. As a result of scholarly investigation of the first three Gospels, it was determined that Mark was actually the first Gospel. What do we know about the book of Mark? It might surprise you to find that there has been some controversy regarding the authorship of the book called "The Gospel according to Mark". Much like the writers of the other Gospels, the writer does not identify himself. He does not declare the occasion for its writing as do Luke (1:1-4) and John (20:30-31). The titles for all four Gospels were given by the church sometime during the first half of the second century. The standard naming convention for a Gospel was "The Gospel according to ... . Usually an Apostle like Matthew, John or a major figure such as Luke, is used to name a Gospel. Mark was not considered a prominent figure Biblically, nor does he appear often in the text. Let's examine the references containing Mark that the Bible does provide. Acts 12:11-12 tells us a bit about Mark's family. Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating." When this had dawned on him, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying. 1) What was happening in these two verses? ○ Peter was released from jail by an Angel. ○ He took refuge at Mary mother of Mark's house. ○ People were worshiping and praying at Mary's house. 2) What was Peter's first action when he realized he been set free? ○ He sought refuge there at a sister in Christ's house. 3) What do these verses say about Mark's mother? ○ She was a devoted Christian. 4) What lessons can we learn from these verses? Note: a. Tradition tells us the author of this Gospel was a Jewish Christian named John Marcus. b. The Roman name of Marcus may indicate Roman citizenship. c. It is thought that the Last Supper took place took place in Mary's house. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. Acts 1:13-14 (NIV) Paul wrote to the church in Colossians verse 4:10 : My fellow prisoner Aristarchus sends you his greetings, as does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. (You have received instructions about him; if he comes to you, welcome him.) Col 4:10 (NIV) 5) What more about Mark can we ascertain from what Paul wrote in Collossians? ○ He was a contemporary of Paul's. ○ Mark was there on Paul's' third missionary journey. ○ Mark and Barnabas were cousins. 6) Why do you think Paul mentions that Mark is Barnabas' cousin? ○ To introduce Mark to the Church. Another reference to Mark is in Acts 13:13, where Mark left the journey at Perga, returning to Jerusalem: From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. Acts 13:13 (NIV) Mark leaving the mission caused a rift between Paul and Barnabas over Mark accompanying them on the second missionary journey: Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the brothers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing." Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. Acts 15:36-40 (NIV) 7) Describe what happens in the above verses? ○ Paul and Barnabas disagree on whether Mark should be included on this trip.. ○ Paul and Barnabas part company over the dispute. 8) Why was Paul upset with Mark? ○ He felt Mark had deserted them earlier. A decade will pass before we hear from Mark again in Philemon 24: Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings. And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers. (NIV) 9) What does this verse tell us about Paul and Mark? ○ They were working together again. In 2 Timothy 4:11, Paul's last letter a few years later, he again mentions Mark: Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry. (NIV) 10) Describe Paul's request in this verse? ○ He asks for Mark specifically. 11) What is Paul's reasoning for asking that Mark join him? ○ Paul finds Mark helpful. The last Biblical reference to Mark comes from 1 Pet 5:13 which simply states: She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. (NIV) 12) What is Peter saying in this verse about Mark? ○ He is probably saying that Mark came to faith through the preaching of Peter. Church father Papias (A.D. 140) states that Mark served as a secretary to Peter and recorded Peter's testimony. Mark as Peter's interpreter is supported by Eusebius and others and is credited to information received from disciples of the Apostle John around 90 to 100 A.D. The order in which Mark presents his Gospel mirrors that of Peter's recitation of those events in the book of Acts. (3:13-14 and 10:36-43) The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. Acts (3:13-14) You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. You know what has happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. "We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree, but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen. He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosenby us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Acts (10:36-43) 13) Is the similarity between Peter's account of the Gospel story and Mark's version in any way supportive of the theory of Mark as Peter's secretary? The date of the writing of the Gospel is also difficult to discern from scripture. The most compelling internal evidence that could point us to a specific time period would be Mark's emphasis of Jesus as the suffering Son of God ,and on suffering discipleship, suggesting Mark's audience to have been Christians undergoing persecution. This would place the date of writing as around the time of Caligula's attempt to place a statue of himself in the guise of Zeus in the temple of Jerusalem. (Josephus Ant. Book 18 Chapter 2 ). Caligula, called Caius by Jewish historian Flavius Josephus, was murdered in 41 A.D. Josephus wrote: "Hereupon Caius, taking it very heinously that he should be thus despised by the Jews alone, sent Petronius to be president of Syria, and successor in the government to Vitellius, and gave him order to make an invasion into Judea, with a great body of troops; and if they would admit of his statue willingly, to erect it in the temple of God; but if they were obstinate, to conquer them by war, and then to do it." 14) What does Joesphus say Caligula was going to do? ○ Threatened war on Judea by way of Syria. 15) What did Judea have to do to avoid this war? ○ Desecrate the temple by placing a statue of Caligula in the Holy of Holies. The second persecution within a few decades of Jesus' crucifixion was under Nero in Rome. This theory places the writing of Mark in the early to mid 60's. Gaius Cornelius Tacitus wrote Annals (book 15 verse 44) in the late first or early second century: "all human efforts, all the lavish gifts of the emperor, and the propitiations of the gods, did not banish the sinister belief that the conflagration was the result of an order. Consequently, to get rid of the report, Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. Christus, from whom the name had its origin, suffered the extreme penalty during the reign of Tiberius at the hands of one of our procurators, Pontius Pilatus, and a most mischievous superstition, thus checked for the moment, again broke out not only in Judaea, the first source of the evil, but even in Rome, where all things hideous and shameful from every part of the world find their centre and become popular. Accordingly, an arrest was first made of all who pleaded guilty; then, upon their information, an immense multitude was convicted, not so much of the crime of firing the city, as of hatred against mankind. Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired. Nero offered his gardens for the spectacle, and was exhibiting a show in the circus, while he mingled with the people in the dress of a charioteer or stood aloft on a car. Hence, even for criminals who deserved extreme and exemplary punishment, there arose a feeling of compassion; for it was not, as it seemed, for the public good, but to glut one man's cruelty, that they were being destroyed." 16) What does Tacitus tells us the reason for this persecution was?
17) Why did Nero choose Christians to blame the fire on? Further evidence that Mark was writing to Romans is the fact that Mark felt the need to explain Jewish practices to his readers, and even interprets Aramaic forms that remain in the text. These practices point to a Gentile audience. We will examine these when we study those verses. Where this Gospel was written is less certain, again Rome is likely. 18) What do you think Mark's main points were when he wrote this book? ○ That Jesus was the prophesied Messiah ○ The message of Christ coming is true in spite of the Jewish peoples rejection. ○ The Gospel is the fulfillment of God's promises to Israel and can not be understood a part from its historical context.
